Types of Poi

by admin on Nov.01, 2009, under Equipment, Poi, Poi info

There are many different types of poi, ranging from the user friendly sock poi to the advanced fire poi. Read on to discover their which one is right for you!!

Fabric Poi

The one most people start with. Made from a soft fabric, they not only look traditional maori poigreat but feel soft (so you don’t hurt yourself doing difficult moves) and are relatively inexpensive. Some of them also have tails that follow the poi as you spin and these can glow under UV light if you choose. I recommend these as presents for anyone new to poi.

Sock Poi

Basically, knee high sock with a weight in the end. However, shop bought ones are made out of a stretchy material that allows you to do more complicated tricks like wraps. For an even more impressive look, get the ones with LED’s!!

Very similar to sock poi are cone poi. They don’t stretch which means you are given much greater control and they have a more defined shape (a cone obviously!!)

Glow Poi

These are a great replacement for fire poi and a good way to train yourself up. They create dazzling effects in the dark and are sure to attract attention!! They can change colour or some just stay the same, either way, you’ll look amazing!

Fire Poi

The ultimate poi experience!! The sight of flames always interests people and these are no exception! Colours will also change depending on the fuel used for an even bigger impact. Warning: For experienced users only.
